Sights and activities in the immediate vicinity

The Pörtschach Tourist Office organizes various activities in and around Pörtschach from early May to mid-October, such as archery, an alpaca hike, cycling and hiking tours, golf clinics and yoga workshops. On presentation of the Wörthersee Plus Card that you receive as a guest of Pension Kitty, participation in most activities is free.

A beautiful and historic landmark is Burg Leonstein, the ruins of a medieval castle where the outer walls and residential tower are still well recognisable. This ruin stands on a mountain top, a few hundred meters west of Pörtschach. At the foot of that mountain you will also find Schloss Leonstain, which dates from the 15th century and now serves as a hotel.

If you want to spend a day in nearby Klagenfurt, Velden or Villach, you can also take the train. You can walk from Pension Kitty to Pörtschach station in about five minutes. Velden is comparable to Pörtschach and here you will find many beautiful villas and a beautiful castle from the Renaissance.

Also worth a visit are Maria Wörth, a small peninsula with two medieval churches, and the Pyramidenkogel. This mountain is located south of Maria Wörth and here you can climb a 100 meter high observation tower and go down by slide, also great fun for the kids!

But it is also beautiful along the shore of the Wörthersee. For example, you can walk to the peninsula via the Johannes-Brahms-Promenade, encountering a park, playground and swimming area for children along the way. From the very tip of the peninsula you can reach the Blumeninsel via a wooden bridge. This uninhabited island is sometimes referred to as Schlangeninsel, although there are no snakes at all. In the summer months, a boat runs between the various towns and villages on the lake; a nice way to discover for example Velden, Reifnitz, Krumpendorf and Maria Wörth.
