Sights and activities in the immediate vicinity
The Pörtschach Tourist Office organises various activities in and around Pörtschach from the beginning of May to mid-October, such as archery, an alpaca walk, cycling and hiking tours, golf clinics and yoga workshops. Upon presentation of the Wörthersee Plus Card that you receive as a guest of Pension Kitty, participation in most activities is free.
A beautiful and historical sight is Burg Leonstein, the ruin of a medieval castle where the outer walls and residential tower are still clearly recognizable. This ruin is located on a mountain top, a few hundred meters west of Pörtschach. At the foot of that mountain you will also find Schloss Leonstain which dates from the 15th century and now serves as a hotel.
If you want to go to nearby Klagenfurt, Velden or Villach for a day, you can also easily do so by train. You can walk from Pension Kitty to the station of Pörtschach in about five minutes. Velden is similar to Pörtschach and here you will find many beautiful villas and a beautiful castle from the Renaissance.
Also worth a visit are Maria Wörth, a small peninsula with two medieval churches, and the Pyramidenkogel. This mountain is located south of Maria Wörth and here you can climb a 100-meter high lookout tower and slide down again, also great fun for the kids!
But it is also beautiful along the shore of the Wörthersee. For example, you can walk to the peninsula via the Johannes-Brahms-Promenade, where you will encounter a park, playground and a swimming area for children. From the very tip of the peninsula you can reach the Blumeninsel via a wooden bridge. This uninhabited island is sometimes also called Schlangeninsel, although there are no snakes at all. In the summer months a boat sails between the various towns and villages on the lake; a fun way to discover Velden, Reifnitz, Krumpendorf and Maria Wörth, for example.
